Divine Mercy Seafood Fest samples Commander's, Muriel's

Family fun and delicious seafood are lined up for the fourth annual Divine Mercy Seafood Festival, Oct. 9 through 11.

The event, sponsored by the Divine Mercy Catholic Church Men's Club, features seafood, music, carnival bumper cars manufacturers and games for the entire family at the church grounds at 4337 Sal Lentini Parkway, Kenner.

Seafood choices will include Commander's Palace turtle soup, King Creole gumbo, Muriel's seafood crepes, oysters, shrimp, soft shell crabs and fish. Jambalaya, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, bread pudding, caramel and candy apples, snow cones and other fair favorites will also be available.

Live music will entertain attendees throughout the weekend beginning at 6 p.m. on Oct. 9 with Paris Avenue, who will perform until 8 p.m., followed by Cold Turkey until 11 p.m.

On Oct. 10 Table for 6 will perform from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by Five Finger Discount from 4 to 7 p.m. and Neutral Snap from 8 to 11 p.m. Epic will entertain everyone from 2 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 11.

The carnival will include dodgem bumper cars for sale such as the expo Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, gravitron, swings, super slide, sea dragon, kiddie train, bumper cars, bouncy bungee jump and more.

The quality collision car amusement rides sessions are Oct. 9 from 6 to 11 p.m.; Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The pre-sale cost of a wrist band per session is $20 and $60 for the entire festival. The pre-sale ends on Oct. 8. Prices at the festival are $1.25 a ticket, 20 tickets for $20, $25 a session and $75 for the entire festival.

Traditional fair attractions will add to the excitement of the festival. There will be a dunking booth, confetti eggs, pull tabs, cherry bells, money wheel, gold fish game and more.  Everyone will enjoy carnival games with prizes and warm cotton candy from the candy wagon.

New this year are a 6-and-under kiddie land featuring inflatables and games and a jail photo booth complete with props for pictures. "We have added several new games and attractions and are trying to grow each year," Emile Larson, festival chairman, said.

There will be raffles for an Apple I Watch, Wii game console and $500 for the cost of $1 a ticket. Festival T-shirts will be sold for $12 and $14 and televisions will show college and NFL games at the hospitality tent.

The festival is an important project for Divine Mercy Parish. "It (the festival) is the largest parish and school fundraiser and the money will be used for the parish capital campaign fund and school technology projects," Larson said.

Co-chairmen for the event are Brian Hymel, Angela Gorman, Amanda Pepitone, Chris Marino, Brian D'Alphonso, Joe Sensebe and Patty Bonura. The St. Ann Elizabeth Ann Seton School teachers, Home and School Association as well as the Divine Mercy Knights of Columbus, Mature Adults, Teen Life CYO and Hispanic Apostolate will assist with the festival.

Night Out

Kenner will celebrate the National Night Out Against Crime on Oct. 13 with neighborhood celebrations throughout the city to show support against crime.

Raymond and Mary Spain will hold a party at their home for their neighbors in the 4100, 4200, 4300 and 4400 blocks of Lake Trail Drive, Kenner. The party begins at 6 p.m. at 4216 Lake Trail Drive, Kenner.

 This will be the 16th annual Night Out Against Crime party hosted by the Spains. They will serve hot tamales, desserts and other foods and drinks.

Bromeliad Show

The 37th annual Southwest Bromeliad Guild Show and 14th International Cryptanthus Society Show will be held on Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 2829 Williams Blvd., Kenner.

Local growers, as well as commercial growers from Texas and Florida, will sell plants, some of which are not available locally.

Driftwood

The Driftwood Garden met in September at the Kenner home of President Christina Carter. Ice breaker games were played and everyone enjoyed a pot luck dinner.

The garden of the month winners for June was Jim and Martha Ball, 68 Nassau Ave., Kenner and Darlene Birkhoff of 52 Nassau Ave., Kenner won the honor in July. The August winners were Ed and Melinda Dahmer, 74 Bimini Ave., Kenner and Bob Suckow, 15 Madera Court, Kenner was the September winner.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School recently announced club officers for the 2015-2016 school year and athletic team members.

Beta Club Officers for this year are: Blaire D'Aunoy and Vito Mumphrey, co-presidents; Alexandra Johnson, historian; Drew Gardner, treasurer and Cody Fruge', reporter/secretary. Other Beta Club members are Emily Adams, Hayden Aleman, Abby Baroni, Grace Beard, Rachelle Burdine, Logan Cafarella, Jonathen Cazabon, Meghan Cifreo, Ben Erdozain, Jake Fraino, Britney Godoy, Ashley Hebert, Ben Hunn, Tyler Johnson, Amely Madrid, Mackenzie Miguez, Diego Paolomo, Carlee Pauley, Vide Reyes, Payton Saucier, Hailey Savoie, Tyler Velino and Camille Vincent.

The members of the girls volleyball senior team are Abby Baroni, Rachelle Burdine, Bryanna Corcoran, Ashley Hebert, Alex Johnson, Ella Mauterer, Mackenzie Miguez, Carlee Pauley, Hailey Savoie and Camille Vincent.

      The junior girls volleyball team members are Ainsley D'Alfonso, Selena Elorza, Victori Fruge', Reagan Guilmino, Caitlyn LaRocca, Priscilla Martinez, Chloe McElroy, and Rylee Pauley.  Developmental team members are Madison Authement, Layla Cage and Cristina Garcia.
